Garden seeds

All through the long winter, I dream of my garden.
On the first day of spring, I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth.
I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar.
~ Helen Hayes

A walk in the park one Saturday in February led to the planning of a garden. Despite the cold there were a few signs of spring to be found.

In our new yard we have plenty of room and sun for a big garden which is something to look forward to. I have been pouring over books and was able to go the Garden Fair last weekend and pick up lots of great information!
The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.
~Dorothy Frances Gurney, "Garden Thoughts"

My dad had this little saying on a garden stake in his backyard, it brings back good memories. I hope that I have inherited a portion of his green thumb!
Sketches have begun and my list is growing of what plants will take up residence in my garden~snapdragons, zinnias, daisies, iris, roses, gomphrena, bachelor buttons, purple coneflowers, peonies, celosia, cosmos. And then there are the vegetables~grape, cherry and slicing tomatoes, lettuces, radishes, peppers, beets and the herbs~sweet basil, thyme, mint, parsley, rosemary, cilantro, lavender...planting the seeds of a new garden on paper!

hearts

Love is in the air. Tomorrow we will celebrate St. Valentine's Day- a day to tell our loved ones how much we care for them. A day that is usually filled with chocolates, flowers, Xs and Os, a small gift, pink and red, a romantic dinner, etc. At the heart of the matter though, Valentine's Day is a day to be aware of how our heart is filled with graditude, fullness and compassion towards someone other than ourself every day of the year.

the heart- a very powerful sign- can be found in the most unexpected, beautiful places.

Keep love in the HEART. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. -Oscar Wilde

Wherever you go. Go with all of your HEART. - Confucius

My mother was born in a very small southwestern Illinois town. She was the 2nd daughter of Wayne and Bernice and later had 2 other sisters and a brother. She was a blonde blue-eyed beauty and a talented musician. She lived a very happy childhood and enjoyed the benefits of a small town life - grandparents she could walk to visit, involvement in every activity the town offered, and no neighbor that was a stranger. There is so much more to her story, I am just reflecting on mom's early years and life in Franklin. Life today offers so many choices, moves so fast and expects so much. Looking back on a childhood of simple pleasures such as swinging on a tire swing, reading and listening to the radio, baking and canning, playing the piano and skipping a rope, pony and sleigh rides, and Sunday dinners with family. Thank you Mom for giving us memories that help instill in us the importance of simple pleasures and family.
